Chasing Waterfalls: Fly Fishing Iceland's Hidden Gems
It’s no secret that I love fly fishing in Iceland! Taking multiple trips per year, I have learned the regions and best opportunities for anglers. Now I am pleased to announce this group trip to one of my favorite fishing locations in the world: The Highlands of Iceland!
The Highlands offers fly fishing in breathtaking scenery, with an abundance of majestic waterfalls, vast lava fields, colorful rhyolite mountains, and glacial rivers. The Highlands are one of the most remote and unspoiled regions in Iceland, thus less frequented by tourists, offering a sense of untouched wilderness and solitude. Did I mention the fishing?
We’ll be targeting some of the most beautiful fish the country offers: Spirited brown trout and vibrant Arctic char. Good news, I have reserved the peak week for us to catch them in the Highlands!
In collaboration with Fish Partner, we will be fishing the two premiere rivers in the Highlands, the Kaldakvísl and Tungnaá. Even more, I have put together an experience unlike any I’ve hosted previously, as each angler will fish below a minimum of three of the most spectacular waterfalls you’ve ever seen. This is the opportunity to fish the hidden gems of Iceland, rivers that many only dream of. Make that dream a reality. Find the itinerary and additional information below.

Testimonial from a hosted trip Client
Would you recommend this trip?
-I absolutely recommend this trip. In fact, I liked it so much I went twice and brought my wife!
What type of angler benefits from this type of trip?
-Anglers of all types and skill levels will get significant opportunities to adapt present techniques and learn new ones. I personally used several types of fly fishing: Indicator nymphing, Dry fly, Euro nymphing, Tenkara nymphing and more. Regardless of what style one choses, there are plenty of opportunities to apply, adapt and challenge one's skills in different waterways. Your guide at Fish Partner will work hard to accommodate whatever you choose. By the way, the folks at Fish Partner are first rate. I became a member and will utilize Fish Partner on future visits.
During the months before the trip, have fun tying (if you’re a fly tier) and visualizing catching Arctic Char and Ice Age Brown Trout on your creations. If you have a travel tying kit, bring it along. It's so much fun having tying parties in the evenings with the guides and other guests. Of course, as is typical, that one pattern you don't have in your box is the one that's hot. Patterns unique to Iceland are also useful here in the USA, namely the "Krokurinn" and the "Alma Run".
Share your favorite experience from traveling to Iceland:
-It is difficult narrowing down a favorite experience. It is all so wonderful. The land is magical, the waters mystical and varied, the fish strong and beautiful, the people wonderful, the food fabulous (Arctic Char sashimi is manna from heaven), the lodging cozy, the beds comfy (way more comfortable than mine at home!).
One thing that sticks out though was on our last fishing day, we all got together with our guides on the shore of a lake near the Highland Lodge for a picnic. One of the guides put on music, we shared our lunches, sipped some beer, traded stories and reflected on the week. We had such a fun and relaxed time fishing with each other and the guides. We would net each other’s fish and spot cruisers directing the casts for each other and revel in everybody’s successes cheering for each fish hooked and netted. It became a spectator sport. It was the perfect way to cap a perfect week. I suspect it will become a tradition.
How was this experience unique from your other fly fishing trips?
- First of all, it is Iceland. Being from Colorado is sort of reminds me of being in the mountains above the timberline, but different. Iceland is so beautiful. Second, being that access to the fisheries is on the “beat system”, the fish are not pressured and you have the place all to yourself. Fish Partner has exceptional beats. As far as you can see in any direction, only you or your party is present. No combat fishing. It is a place where dreams are made. Third, we liked it there so much my wife stated, “we need to figure out how to rent an apartment or house and live here part of the time.”
Advice for others traveling to Iceland?
1. Don’t hesitate, just do it. Tim and Rob made a trip of a lifetime available and easy to do. Take advantage of it.
2. Put studs on your wading shoes and bring a wading staff.
3. Become familiar with different styles of casting. As previously mentioned, the waters and conditions are so varied, no one way of fishing is applicable everywhere.
4. Bring layers of clothing. It is common to be putting on and taking off layers throughout the day.
5. Be prepared to find yourself already planning your next trip while still there.
6. Relax and have fun. If the fishing is slow, take a seat, have a drink or a sandwich and revel in the moment.
